Chandler’s Dalton Brady wins 4th state wrestling title

azcentral sports Fri Feb 8, 2013 11:12 PM

PRESCOTT VALLEY — He saved perhaps his toughest match for last, but it ended the same as all of the others — with a victory.
Welcome Dalton Brady to Arizona’s club of four-time state champions. The Chandler High 138-pound senior won a hard-fought Division I championship match against Laveen Cesar Chavez junior Dajour Reece on Friday at Tim’s Toyota Center to become the 28th Arizona wrestler to win four titles. He also has titles at 103, 112 and 120.
“I’m just psyched right now,” Brady said. “It’s a very exclusive club, and now I’m part of it.”
Brady and Reece wrestled to a 0-0 draw after the first period, with Brady scoring a takedown and Reece an escape in the second for a 2-1 Brady lead. Reece got another escape to tie it in the third but then gave Brady a point for stalling.
That’s when Brady went to work. With time running down, he grabbed ahold of Reece’s leg and eventually scored another takedown, winning the match 5-3 to run his season record to 33-0.
“It was a tight match,” Brady said. “I had that leg, and he was fighting it the whole time, but I ducked up and came through and finished it, and I was like, ‘It’s over.’”
Brady’s efforts were not enough for Chandler to win the Division I team title, however, as that went to Tucson Sunnyside, which had won 14 consecutive state team championships before having that streak snapped last season.
Sunnyside was helped by an emotional pair of victories by the Olivas brothers, Juaqin and William. Juaqin, a sophomore, won at 113 pounds, while William, a junior, took home the 126-pound title.
“It’s unbelievable,” Juaqin said. “Being brothers, and doing the same thing at the same time, it just feels really awesome.”
“It’s the best thing in the world,” William said.
Four undefeated wrestlers squared off at 160 and 170 pounds Friday. Tempe Corona del Sol junior Ethan Tursini (44-0) defeated Avondale Westview junior Kordell Provchy (34-1), and then Chandler Basha junior Trey Ronayne (42-0) beat Anthem Boulder Creek junior Jro Byrd (44-1).
Other individual champions Friday included: Jacob Reyes, Jr., Surprise Valley Vista (106); Efren Hernandez, Sr., Phoenix Carl Hayden (120); Glenn Farina, Jr., Corona del Sol (132); Michael Suwyn, Jr., Glendale Mountain Ridge (145); Seth Monty, Sr., Mesa Mountain View (152); Alex Bambic, Sr., Phoenix Desert Vista (182); Gabriel Gonzales, Jr., Sunnyside (195); Ben Andrew, Sr., Mesa (220); Keyley Ellis, Sr., Gilbert (heavyweight).

Chandler's Dalton Brady wins fourth straight wrestling title

PRESCOTT VALLEY – What’s next for Dalton Brady?
He essentially saved the life of Brian Brady, his dad, when was in the fourth grade after the latter sank to the bottom of their pool due to hypothermia and Dalton jumped in to help him out until others came to the rescue.
“I was just scared for my Dad,” Brady said. “I didn’t know what was going on but knew I had to do something. I jumped in and did what I could until help came.”
He has won not only four, but eight straight state titles, counting junior high state champions. While the Chandler senior is the 28th in Arizona to accomplish four high school titles, he is believed to be the first one to win eight.
“I wanted to be something unique,” he said. “Others have won four state titles, no one has done that before.”
Oh, and he put it all on the line for the team this postseason by wrestling up two weight classes as he won the 138-pound Division I state title on Friday at Tim’s Toyota Center. He had to score late to beat Cesar Chavez’s Dajour Reece 5-3.
So what is next for Dalton Brady?
“I’m just getting started,” he said after finally realizing the goal he set eight years ago with his dad.
He is committed to Utah Valley, but could very well end up back at the Olympic Training Center or redshirt. First up is trying to make the Junior Worlds team. Ultimately, the Olympics are out there, but for now he is savoring the win over Reece.
Reece is a big 140-pounder who probably had 5 inches of height, which created a lot of leverage for Reece as he continually fought off shot attempts and entered the third period tied at 2.
Until Dalton realized he had to lower his level once in on the shot to counter the leverage.
“I figured out to drop my elevation and he went right over me,” Brady said. “I was like thank God.”
He is also thankful, of course, that his Dad has been an essential part of his career, especially knowing what could have been if he didn’t make that decision to go in after Brian.
“We have always been tight and I guess that is one of the reasons why,” Dalton said. “He is my best friend and he is the reason I am as good as I am.”

Chandler Wrestling places 2nd at State!

Sunnyside wins team wrestling title; Basha's Trey Ronayne, Corona and Gilbert kids win ind. titles

By Jason P. Skoda, Special to Tribune | Posted: Saturday, February 9, 2013 12:28 am
PRESCOTT VALLEY – The big-school wrestling championships had a familiar look to it.
There were many repeat individual champions – although a few were unable to recapture that magic – and Sunnyside took back its state dominance with authority to capture its amazing 30th state title.
It’s was an interesting two days at Tim’s Toyota center as the action showed once again that just about anything can happen in six minutes, or longer in some cases.
The highlight of the night was Chandler’s Dalton Brady (138, Division I) becoming Arizona’s 28th four-time state champion, while Desert Vista’s Alex Bambic won his third, pulling off the rare feet of dropping a weight class each year this time at 182.
Brady was wrestling up two weight classes in order to help the Wolves attempt to win a second straight state team title, but they came up short when many of their consolation wrestlers were unable to advance as far as expected while Sunnyside had nearly a flawless morning session.
“If I was going to win my fourth it was going to mean more if we won a team title again,” Brady said. “It didn’t come together but I love our team and would do anything for them.”
Sunnyside finished with 151, while Chandler was next at 132, followed by Corona del Sol (127) and Mesa Mountain View (122.5).
Tommy John surgery and wrestling doesn’t quite resonate as much as baseball and ligament transplant surgery does.
Basha junior Trey Ronayne doesn’t care, but was happy that the surgery that ended his season last year brought him back stronger than ever for this junior year to go undefeated and win the Division I 170-pound title.
“I did it at sectionals last year and I never got a chance to wrestle at state,” he said. “It feels good to come all the way back. I’ll be coming back for more next year.”
Other repeat champions were Mesa Mountain View’s Seth Monty, who won three overtime semifinal matches in state action in his career, won his second title and Mesa’s Ben Andrew finished off a dominating season with his second Division I title at 220.
Corona had two champions in Glenn Farina (132, Division I) and Ethan Tursini (160)
Farina won what might have been the most controversial match of the finals as he appeared to secure a winning takedown against Cibola’s Luis Nunez in overtime but the referee let the action continue. About eight seconds later the two wrestlers went out of bounds and the two referees conferred.
Farina was awarded the winning two points for a 2-0 OT win.
Three former state champions were unable to repeat as Chandler’s Tristan Moran (126, DI) Highland’s Curt Done (145, DI) and Marcos de Niza’s Jesse Morales (132, Division II) were upended.
“I guess I have to change my goals and work harder,” said the sophomore Moran, who was shooting to win four and was dealing with a rib injury. “I’ll refocus and get back to work.”
Gilbert’s Keyley Ellis won one of the rare all-Southeast Valley finals with a 5-3 win over Mesa’s Robert Schrock for the Division I heavyweight championship.
The area Division II state champions were Queen Creek’s Hayden Moore (170) and Marcos de Niza’s Derek Crain (220).
