Coaches assess threats as HS wrestling begins

The Arizona temperatures are cooling down, and once again that means
that it’s time for the high-school wrestling season to start heating up.
Last year’s returning champions are ready to defend their crowns, and everyone else will be eager to dethrone the champs and be the last ones standing at the end of the year.
One wrestler who knows the feeling of victory well is Dalton Brady. The Chandler senior will look to become Arizona’s 29th four-time state champion and fourth in the last three years.
“I think a lot of coaches would describe him as a once-in-a-career kind of athlete,” Chandler coach Vidal Mejia said. “You don’t get to coach too many kids like him.”
Brady was an integral part of Chandler’s Division I state-title team last season, but look for a new champion to emerge this year. Five teams finished within 12 points of Chandler in 2011-12, and the top of the leaderboard will likely be tightly packed once again.
In an azcentral sports preseason survey sent out to coaches across the state, several in Division I tabbed Yuma Cibola as their team to beat. Cibola returns a state placer in nearly every weight class, and one coach even went so far as to say, “They will kill us all.”
Tucson Sunnyside, with second-year coach Anthony Leon settling in and motivated to return Sunnyside to the top after its streak of 14 consecutive state titles was snapped last year, will surely be a threat. And a handful of teams, including Phoenix Desert Vista, Tempe Corona del Sol, Phoenix Horizon and Mesa Mountain View should all be strong come state-tournament time.
The picture is a little clearer in Division II, where Oro Valley Ironwood Ridge enters the season as the favorite to win its third straight state championship. Coach Tim Berrier returns a strong trio of seniors in defending champs Troy Taylor and Matt Filbert and runner-up Tate Sandifer, who also won the 125-pound title two years ago.
Yuma Gila Ridge and Marana Mountain View, last year’s team runner-up and fifth-place finishers, respectively, have the best shot at derailing Ironwood Ridge’s three-peat chances.
Division III also has a team going for three straight titles in Phoenix Thunderbird, but its path to the championship likely won’t be as easy.
This is perhaps the most wide-open division of the four, as only two individual champions from last year return and a slew of teams have the potential to end the season on top.
Coaches were just as undecided as more than a dozen teams were named as contenders in the preseason survey, although the likeliest bets look to be Cottonwood Mingus, Gilbert Campo Verde and Lakeside Blue Ridge.
But just like last season when Thunderbird’s chances to repeat were doubted, Steve Linsacum’s team can’t be counted out.
In contrast, Division IV could be the easiest division to forecast. St. Johns returns two of its five state champions from 2011 to 2012, seniors Brock Crosby and Jared Anderson, and is in great position to defend last year’s team title.
Camp Verde and Morenci will be in the hunt and at the very least will try to make sure St. Johns doesn’t run away with the title as it did a season ago, when it won by 67 points.
Regardless, St. Johns joins Chandler, Ironwood Ridge and Thunderbird as the targets of their respective divisions, something each team’s coach is certainly well aware of.
“We can’t take anybody for granted,” St. Johns coach Brandon Crosby said. “We’ve got an ‘X’ on our backs, and we’ve got to embrace the challenge and go to work.”

The start of each of wrestling season in Arizona the last few season has had some common themes. The beginning of 2012-13 season was no different.
The season began in earnest last week with changes to the state tournament yet again, transfers finding new homes and the area’s elite talent continues to find more and more opportunities.
Let’s take on the state tournament process first.
Each of the four divisions now have four sectional meets (up from three) with the top four schools/wrestlers advancing to state (instead of five plus one overall at-large) in an effort to spread out the wealth of talent.
The seeding for state goes like this: The sectional champs will earn the top four seed. The section runner-up will be placed on the opposite side of the bracket than their respective sectional champ. The other eight qualifiers will be placed in the bracket by blind draw.
It’s good in some regard, but still not completely what coaches want in regards to the field of sectional (some are stacked — especially Division I, Sections III and IV — while others are weak) and the state meet seeding. To that end, most prefer No. 1 vs. 4 or No. 2 vs. 3 matchups) still could cause some tougher than need be first round match ups.
“It’s a step forward, but not a big step,” Desert Vista coach David Gonzalez said. “We get a little closer each year. It is much better than it used to be so we will get through it and see what happens”
Next year changes are anticipated because the appeal process will put a lot more teams in Division II and lesser numbers in Division I so it might be hard getting enough teams in DI for four sectionals.
“We will revisit and see how it all works outs,” Arizona Interscholastic Association tournament director Dean Visser said.
One thing that also keeps getting better is the number of elite wrestlers earning Division I college scholarships.
This year Chandler’s Dalton Brady (Utah Valley), Mountain View’s Seth Monty (Arizona St.) along with two wrestlers with Arizona ties — Robbie Mathers (Utah Valley/Desert Vista/Olympic Training Center) and Garret Ryan (Columbia/Horizon/Wyoming Semiary, Pa.) — found a home.
Desert Vista’s Alex Bambic, who will probably end up at West Pointe Prep School, and Mesa’s Ben Andrew, possibly Arizona State, will end up somewhere at the end of the year as well.
The interesting one was Brady after he de-committed from Arizona State to attend Utah Valley. He’s lost once in Arizona as he goes for his fourth state title.
“I had to find a place that it is going to get me to the next level,” said Brady, who cited the presence of Utah Valley associate coach Erkin Tadzhimetov (9-time national champion and similar weight to Brady) as a major influence. “They have the coaching staff that can work with me. It was a tough decision, but I found the right spot for me.”
The top teams look to be much of the same as Division I defending state champion Chandler brings back plenty of talent, including state champion Tristan Moran, state-placer Dalton Moran and Brady. Mountain View has the Monty brothers (Blake and Monty), Corona del Sol (despite state placer Daniel Cartegena moved to Texas), Desert Vista (Bambic, Brian Mitchell and Jeremiah Imonode) and most of the other Mesa district schools will be challengers.
Marcos de Niza, despite the retirement of longtime coach Jim Weed, and Queen Creek, which has three state placers and freshman Anthony Wokasch, will be Division II contenders.
Division III only had one top 10 team a year ago in Campo Verde, which had a senior-laden roster, with Tempe, Combs and Higley fielding solid teams as well.
This should be a better season for Division IV squads as few teams made an impression a year ago. Canyon State always produces top individuals while San Tan Foothills has been making strides each year.
Teams to watch
Chandler: The Division I defending champions have two state champs returning along with two other state placers and Hamilton transfer Ulibarri
Corona del Sol: Losing the Cartagena brothers to Texas hurts, but plenty of talent is back with Ethan Tursini, Glenn Farina and Zach Walton.
Desert Vista: Alex Bambic and Brian Mitchell are the only state placers coming back but there is plenty of talent with Matt Mathers, Cooper Gardner, Tristan Ezell and Horizon-transfer Jeremiah Imondoe capable of finding the podium this year.
Mountain View: The Monty brothers (Seth and Blake) drive the room while Grant Huber is as steady as they come.
Queen Creek: Coach Tom Wokasch’s influence will start being felt this year with three state placers back in Devan Adkins, MacKenzie Hill and Hayden Moore, along with freshman Anthony Wokasch at 126.
Wrestlers to watch
Tristan Moran, So., 106, Chandler: Training with Cejudo, Brady helps just a little
Travis Matt, Jr., 113, Horizon: Horizon lost some of its firepower due to transfers but Matt still there
Dalton Brady, Sr., 120, Chandler: One career loss in AZ for Utah Valley recruit, going for fourth state title
Seth Monty, Sr., 145, Mountain View: Finishing second last year didn’t sit well; ASU recruit wants gold again
Alex Bambic, Sr., 195, Desert Vista: Has anyone ever won 3 state titles at a lower weight class each year? He may be the first.
Ben Andrew, Sr., 220, Mesa: Made huge strides last season to win state; will progression continue?

In this format athletes and coaches will be instructed by a featured clinician in a large group for 1 hour and then they will be able to choose 2 additional 45 minute breakout sessions that they would like to see. This allows athletes and coaches to choose the technique sessions that best fits their wrestling style. In the afternoon session the athletes will be given the opportunity to try out their newly acquired skills in a dual meet competition format. Each team will wrestle a minimum of 7 duals over the course of the week.

Arizona's Top 10 high school wrestling teams: 2011-12
Here is an end of the season poll:
by Tyler Killian - Feb. 16, 2012 01:20 PM
The Arizona Republic | azcentral.com
No. 10 Tempe Marcos de Niza: Jesse Morales' win at 132 pounds
was the highlight for Marcos de Niza at the state tournament, in which
it finished in third place in the Division II team standings. Marcos
also had two runner-ups and a third-place finisher.
No. 9 Phoenix Horizon: Two individual champions and three third-place finishers propelled Horizon to a fourth-place finish at the Division I state tournament, only nine points off team champion Chandler's pace.
No. 8 Tucson Sunnyside: It was a bumpy ride this year for Sunnyside and first-year coach Anthony Leon, finishing third at the Flowing Wells Invitational in January and ending its 14-year streak of team titles at the state tournament. But give Leon time to establish his identity and Sunnyside should recover quickly.
No. 7 St. Johns: It wrestled in the smallest division, but recognition has to be given for the way it completely manhandled the competition in Division IV, winning the state team title by 67 points. Congratulations also go out to four-time state champ Ryder Nielsen.
No. 6 Phoenix Desert Vista: Thought to have the best chance to dethrone Sunnyside before the state tournament, DV did in fact finish higher in the Division I standings. It just couldn't beat out Chandler and Cibola as well, as three individual champions led it to a third-place finish.
No. 5 Yuma Gila Ridge: Despite not having an individual champion at the state tournament, Gila Ridge had a wrestler place in nearly every weight class (two runners-up, five third-place finishers), contributing to the team's runner-up showing in Division II.
No. 4 Phoenix Thunderbird: Overlooked throughout the year after losing seven of its top wrestlers from last season, Thunderbird roared back at state to defend its Division III team title. With four state titles and four runners-up in the last eight years, coach Steve Linsacum's group may have succeeded Sunnyside as Arizona's next wrestling dynasty.
No. 3 Yuma Cibola: This was the year of "almost" for Cibola, coming in second at Flowing Wells and narrowly missing out on the Division I state team title by 1.5 points to Chandler. But its consistency and strong showing at state were impressive nonetheless.
No. 2 Chandler: Led by three-time state champ Dalton Brady, Chandler came together at the right time to nab the Division I team title, putting in an impressive final day of wrestling that included two individual champions and one runner-up.
No. 1 Oro Valley Ironwood Ridge: A win at Flowing Wells got the team moving in the right direction and set the stage for it to blow away the competition at the state tournament. It had three individual champions and defended its Division II team title easily, winning by 54.5 points.

The moment Chandler Wrestling Won State!
Dalton Brady wrestles with decision: Olympic training, or regular high school life
Decision by Chandler wrestler to leave Olympic Training Center becomes a win-win as he helps Wolves win team title while winning his third state title.
Ever since word broke that Dalton Brady returned to Arizona, there have been questions about what it meant for his future.
None of that seemed to matter Saturday night.
Brady's smile was as large as his international potential as he milled around his Chandler (Ariz.) teammates on the floor at Tim's Toyota Center celebrating the team's Division I state wrestling title, the first for the program since 1990.
"This right here is why we are back. He just helped his team to a team championship," Brian Brady, his father, said. "We weren't going to get that anywhere else."
Anywhere else for five months was the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., where Brady was invited to train over the summer. Eventually Dalton withdrew from Chandler as his father and he decided to move to Colorado permanently and train there year-round with the nation's best competitors and coaching staff.
"It was an amazing opportunity," Brady, a 120-pound junior, said after winning his third state title. "They freshen you up on technique, but the mental side is where you are really challenged."
For someone who has the aspirations (Olympics) that he does, the resume (fifth at the FILA Cadet World Championships in Hungary) he has and the desire he has to be challenged (119-1 against Arizona competition), it was the right move for Dalton the wrestler.
Logistically, however, there were some struggles for Dalton the teenager.
When questions about recruiting and his eligibility popped up after he enrolled at Coronado (Colorado Springs, Colo.) near the OTC, they didn't want to risk messing with the chance of missing the high school season.
Being a four-time champ has been a goal for a long time and it didn't make sense to risk that, along with the other things pulling them back to Arizona. Like his mom, Laurie, who was still in Arizona, which made the five months feel like five years.
"I missed my wife and my house was there," Brian said. "He got better but what price do you pay? Our team just won state and we weren't expected to. It doesn't get much better than being a kid and sharing in something like this that you will always remember."
Brady will return this summer to the OTC to go through another baptism into the life he hopes to live full-time someday, and then come back for his senior year at Chandler.
"They understood why we left and I can go back whenever I want," Dalton said. "I couldn't ask for a better situation. My goals haven't changed. I'll be back when the timing is right."

Chandler wrestling nets Division I team championship
Sunnyside's lengthy title run ends
PRESCOTT VALLEY - The Wolves have roared.
Chandler High scored an emotional victory Saturday, taking home the
Division I team title at the state wrestling championships at Tim's
Toyota Center.
In a tightly contested tournament that came down to the wire, Chandler emerged with 122 points, besting the 120.5 of Yuma Cibola.
"It was a battle," Chandler associate head coach Curtis Owen said. "It was fun because there were like eight teams that could've won it.
"I'm just so proud of (our kids) because they stepped up and got it done when it counted."
Tucson Sunnyside finished tied for fourth with 113 points, marking the first time in 15 years that it will not be crowned state champion.
"It's bittersweet," first-year Sunnyside coach Anthony Leon said. "But we're going to put up a picture of (Chandler), and we're going to go in and work our tails off (to come back strong next year)."
Leading the charge for Chandler was junior Dalton Brady, who defeated Mesa Westwood's Da'Wayne Robertson at 120 pounds to claim his third state title.
The win gives Brady the chance to become a four-time state champion next year, after Safford's Trey Andrews and St. Johns' Ryder Nielsen both accomplished the feat Friday.
"It's exciting," Brady said of his rare opportunity.
"It's been my goal since I was a freshman."
Phoenix Desert Vista senior Robbie Mathers also won his third state crown Saturday, defeating Zach Walton of Tempe Corona del Sol by major decision, 22-8, for the 132-pound championship.
Mesa's Ben Andrew scored the upset of the evening at 220 pounds, beating defending champion Cedric Gonzalez of Sunnyside and ending Gonzalez's undefeated season.
"It feels great. I love it," said Andrew, who was leading the match 6-2 when Gonzalez was disqualified in the third period. "I knew he didn't have much in the tank, so I was just going to push him and push him and make him as tired as I could."
Other Division I champions from Saturday night's finals included: Tristan Moran, Chandler (106 pounds); Dajour Reece, Laveen Cesar Chavez (113); Octavio Penunuri, Mesa Mountain View (126); Robert Sobarzo, Desert Vista (138); Pierre Gaud, Cibola (145); Samson Imonode, Phoenix Horizon (152); Diorian Coleman, Mesa (160); Garrett Ryan, Horizon (170); Christian Allen, Gilbert Highland (182); Alex Bambic, Desert Vista (195); Matt Zismann, Phoenix Sandra Day O'Connor (heavyweight).

Chandler wrestlers’ small gifts speak volumes
http://blogs.evtrib.com/varsityxtra/2012/01/31/chandler-wrestlers-small-gifts-speak-volumes/
At least a couple Chandler High wrestlers took the “Prusuing Victory with Honor” mantra seriously.
The Wolves competed at the Brad Jones Wrestling Invitational last weekend at Peoria Centennial High School, a meet recently named after fallen Glendale Police Officer Brad Jones.
Jones, who’d been with the police department for four years, was dispatched to aid a probation officer dealing with a probationer.
At some point during the contact, a physical struggle ensued. Jones radioed for help and several officers responded to assist him, but the suspect drew a gun, fired at Jones and critically wounded him.
The suspect was eventually involved in a single-car accident while being chased by police, then tried to flee on foot, and drew his weapon again. He was shot by police.
Jones passed away from the wounds later that night. The former Centennial-graduate left behind his wife, and pre-school-aged son and daughter.
A ceremony was held at last weekend’s invitational to honor Jones and his family. His two children were on-hand to hand out medals to wrestlers who won their respective weight classes.
When the Wolves’ Tristan Moran won at 106 pounds, Jones’ son began to cry because he didn’t want to give up the medal, so Tristen gave the medal back to the officer’s son.
When Tristen’s brother, Dalton, went to the podium after winning at 138 pounds, a similar scenario unfolded with Jones’ daughter when she gave him the medal, so he also returned the medal to Jones’ daughter to keep.
Centennial principal Davita Solter e-mailed Chandler principal Terry Williams of these charitable acts.
That recognition part is obviously nice, but irrelevant here. The best gift being a couple more teenagers found giving is its own reward.
